The 1772 Foundation has moved to Providence, Rhode Island. We will be leasing space from the Providence Preservation Society (PPS).

John Carter House

Formed in 1956, the PPS has grown from a small neighborhood group to a multifaceted, citywide preservation organization. The 1772 Foundation’s office is in the John Carter House. The building also is known as Shakespeare’s Head. That name recalls the colonial era when the first floor of the building was used as a print shop and post office by John Carter, who trained with Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia. The Carter family lived upstairs. The enterprises were advertised by a sign outside the building featuring the head of Shakespeare.

Liberty Hall

Coincidentally, the John Carter house was built in 1772, the same year as Liberty Hall in Union, New Jersey, the ancestral home of the Livingston and Kean families. The late Stewart B. Kean was the original benefactor of The 1772 Foundation.
